Therapy as a treatment for non-physical symptoms of menopause

A new study by UCL researchers has found that interventions such as Mindfulness-Based Interventions (MBI) and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) could be an effective treatment option for menopause-related mood symptoms, memory, and concentration issues.

It is a meta-analysis of 30 studies to be published in the Journal of Affective Disorders. The researchers found improvements in anxiety and depression following CBT and MBI. They also found improvements in memory and concentration following CBT and group-based psychosocial interventions. All psychosocial interventions were effective in improving quality of life.

Journalists came to this press briefing to hear the authors discuss their research and answer their questions.

Speakers included:

Prof Aimee Spector, Professor of Clinical Psychology of Ageing, Department of Educational and Health Psychology UCL

Dr Roopal Desai, Clinical Fellow in the Department of Educational and Health Psychology, UCL
