Deafness is primarily caused by the loss of sensory hair cells in the ear and their associated auditory neurons.
Two authors of a study, published in Nature, came to the SMC to report on how they took adult gerbils, made them deaf and then attempted to restore their hearing ability using human embryonic stem cells.
