expert reaction to the CSO Environmental Indicators Ireland 2024 Report

Irish scientists comment on the Central Statistics Office (CSO) Environmental Indicators Ireland report for 2024.

Dr Salem Gharbia, Head of the Department or Environmental Science, Atlantic Technological University, said:

“The 6.8% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions in 2023 is a positive step, however, it falls far short of the 42% reduction target set under the EU’s Effort Sharing Regulation for 2030. This underscores the urgent need for more ambitious and accelerated action. Meanwhile, the 68% increase in fossil fuel subsidies in 2022 is deeply concerning, as it directly undermines efforts to transition away from carbon-intensive energy sources. Redirecting these subsidies toward renewable energy projects and energy efficiency initiatives would not only speed up decarbonisation but also support a fair and sustainable energy transition. On a more positive note, 41% of Ireland’s electricity in 2023 came from renewable sources, particularly wind energy. With Ireland setting ambitious targets to harness its vast maritime resources—aiming for 20 gigawatts of offshore wind capacity by 2040 and at least 37 gigawatts by 2050—there is a clear need for decisive action and investment to ensure these targets are met.”
