The UK has recorded its highest daily increase in deaths since April, with 981 people dying within 28 days of developing coronavirus.
Prof Paul Hunter, Professor in Medicine, The Norwich School of Medicine, University of East Anglia, said:
“Just a note about the very high number of reported deaths today. Such a high number of reported deaths today is not surprising, but a lot of these deaths will be from several days ago and the reports have been held in the system because of the bank holidays. Yesterday was the first non-holiday or non-weekend since Thursday so a big jump in reported deaths today was inevitable. But don’t read too much into it, the 7-day rolling mean value has not changed that much but we will need to wait for another week to get a better understanding of mortality when the holiday period is behind us.”
