comments on Simon Singh winning the latest round of his libel case

Simon Singh has won the latest round of his libel case against the British Chiropractic Association (BCA), which began around two years ago when he was sued by the BCA for comments he made about the evidence basis for chiropractic treatments.

Prof Colin Blakemore, Professor of Neuroscience, University of Oxford, said:

“This decision is a very significant step in the efforts to prevent the British libel laws being used to stifle legitimate criticism of unjustified claims about science and technology. The public will be the ultimate beneficiaries of Simon Singh’s brave campaign to win this case.”

Gail Cardew, Director of Programmes, Royal Institution of Great Britain, said:

“Royal Institution welcomes this judgement as it will encourage scientists and the public to discuss evidence freely without fear of legal threat.”

Roland Jackson, Chief Executive, British Science Association, said:

“This is brilliant news. Common sense breaks out at last in the libel courts, and I strongly hope this continues into the final hearing.”
