Scientists react to an independent review of suicides and gender dysphoria.
Prof Ashley Grossman FMedSci, Emeritus Professor of Endocrinology, University of Oxford, said:
“This is a very thorough review and should dispel claims that the cessation of puberty-blocking drugs has led to a marked increase in adolescent and child suicides. Suicides in this age group are always distressing, and while gender dysphoria of any nature and cause can cause concern, and such patients need calm and sensitive counselling, claims of an absence of puberty-blockers causing an uptick in these events are unsubstantiated and an unnecessary and harmful cause of concern. One would hope that the detailed and compassionate analysis in the Cass report can now be translated into sympathetic action for all these young people without the automatic prescription of these agents”.
