The Office for National Statistics (ONS), have released the latest data for deaths in England and Wales.
Prof Sir David Spiegelhalter, Emeritus Professor of Statistics, University of Cambridge, said:
“There has been a large jump to 2,064 excess non-Covid deaths registered in week Dec 17-23 in England and Wales, up from 796 in previous week, with increases in both deaths at home and in hospital. This would reflect deaths occurring in mid-December, when there was a very cold spell. Presumably much of this increase is due to the cold, although the increasing problems in access to NHS care are likely to have contributed, although it is not possible to say by how much.”
