The House of Lords opened an inquiry into Risk Assessment and Planning in October 2020. They have assessed UK government planning and handling of a wide range of severe and existential risks including pandemics, biological threats, climate change and space weather. Their new report – Preparing for Extreme Risks: Building a Resilient Society – draws conclusions about the government’s system of risk management, accountability and risk communication and identifies weaknesses in the government’s preparedness for ‘high-impact-low probability’ risks.
