the future of using patient data to improve healthcare

The explosion of technology has the potential to transform healthcare, allowing patients to wear devices and use apps to monitor and improve their health, and for appointments and records to be used in a smarter, more joined-up way.

Integrating these fully into our healthcare system is not as far away as many may think, however a radical change in culture will be needed to make the most of emerging technologies while also retaining public trust.

The Academy of Medical Sciences has just completed a yearlong project to ask: how can we make sure everyone benefits from the use of patient data in healthcare technologies?

The SMC brought together key members of the steering committee to launch a new Academy of Medical Sciences report and answer questions including:

• Which data led technologies are already helping the lives of patients in the UK?
• What action should the NHS, industry and regulators take now?
• Which new technologies show the most promise to help patients in the near future?
• How do patients and the public expect the NHS to use their personal data?
• How could the NHS evolve to use patient data to revolutionise healthcare?
• Could or should computers ever replace doctors?
