We’ve heard various strong and sometimes conflicting claims from celebrities and politicians about the merits and harms of dietary fats when it comes to our health and our waistlines.
This summer the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition published their draft guideline on saturated fat, which reiterated previous recommendations that we should get no more than 10% of our total dietary energy from saturated fats, and that saturated fats should be substituted with unsaturated fats in our diets.
So is butter back, or isn’t it? What does the science say, and where does the weight of evidence lie?
