the 100,000 Genomes Project – how will it work?

The 100,000 Genomes Project, coordinated by Genomics England, will begin soon, with the first full samples being taken in early 2015. Recruitment to the project will be handled by NHS England. What are the aims of the project, and who will benefit from it?

A panel of experts came to the SMC to discuss:

• How did the pilot sequencing projects go?
• Which NHS Trusts will be designated genomic medicine centres, and why?
• What will actually happen at the genomic medicine centres?
• Which diseases / patients will be sequenced?
• How much will it cost?
• How will data be collected and stored?
• What about data security?
• Who can use the data – academia and / or pharmaceutical companies?
• What about insurance companies?
• What is the potential for the project to advance healthcare and treatment development?
