The SMC hosted the launch of the annual statistics on the use of animals in scientific research in Great Britain and the Animals in Science Regulation Unit (ASRU) annual report for 2012.
The ‘Statistics of Scientific Procedures on Living Animals 2012’ is compiled from returns provided by project licence holders. The annual report provides an account of the Home Office’s activities in relation to the regulation of animal testing. It also looks at the transposition of the new European Directive on animal research, which was introduced to standardised regulations across EU countries.
The SMC also invited two leading scientists who have a broad overview of animal research to give their initial reaction to the stats, answer questions and place any rise or fall in the context of developments in scientific research.
Speakers:
Dr Judy MacArthur Clark, head of the Home Office’s Animals in Science Regulation Unit.
Will Reynolds, Home Office’s Animals in Science Regulation Unit,
Professor Ian Jackson, MRC Human Genetics Unit, University of Edinburgh
Professor Dominic Wells, Royal Veterinary College
